img8798The same development team that created the Ocean Planet Open 60 has designed a new 40 foot sportboat with an innovative rig: the Wylie Wildcat 40+. The most striking feature of the boat is the rig: a self-tuning, rotating carbon cat rig (no jibs) with asymmetrical spinnakers. The mast and rigging were developed by Ocean Planet skipper Bruce Schwab, together with the Wylie Design Group and sparmaker Ted Van Dusen of Composite Engineering.

Design features include:

img8797Hull: Composite with variable density core. Built stiff and strong to withstand years of serious racing and cruising. Lightweight inboard gas engine with saildrive for quiet motoring at 7+ knots. Custom mounted 100ah alternator.

Keel and bulb: Custom lightweight cold-formed and welded steel keel blade to maximize bulb weight and extremely low CG. Keel foil and bulb shapes by Paul Bogataj (Top AC boat hydrodynamicist and designer of Ocean Planet?s keel and bulb). Keel head inserted into hull AC boat style for maximum rigidity.

Mast and Rigging: Super lightweight, rotating, round, carbon fiber mast with carbon fiber wishbone booms. Mast with active self-tuning. No jibs to tack, ever. Rotating mast improves aerodynamics and allows easier and safer reefing. Fractional asymmetrical spinnakers flown off the wind for balanced helm and total control with maximum power. Mast tube and bearings by Ted Van Dusen of Composite Engineering.

Interior: Simple head, ice box, sink w/freshwater tank, sea-cook stove, and basic berths. Basic chart table and navigation station for ocean use.
